Etymology: To Lat. au- in au-fugio etc., Lith. au-, OCS. u- `away from, further to Skt. áva `down'. - Often connected with other adverbs and particles: αὖ-τε (αὑ-τ-άρ), αὖ-τι-ς, αὖ-τι-ν (αὑ-τί-κα), αὖ-θι, αὖ-θι-ς, αὖ-θε (Schwyzer 629); cf. Osc. auti = Lat. aut; Lat. autem; also Goth. auk (= αὖ γε??) `then, but, also' etc.
